A simple and easy tutorial for pumpkin scented autumn candles

Pumpkin scented autumn candles are perfect for adding a touch of fall to any room in your house. A pumpkin spice candle will fill your home with the warm smells of the season.

Now that you know how to choose the perfect fall candle for your needs and you’ve picked the perfect fall scent, it’s time to start making your fall smelling candles!

Gather your supplies which will include:

  • Soy wax or paraffin wax
  • 100% cotton candle wicks
  • Autumn inspired scents (such as spiced pumpkin, pumpkin pie or spicy cinnamon)
  • A double boiler or microwave-safe container
  • Cupcake liners or tea light containers
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • A ladle for pouring wax
  • Wooden skewers and clothespins to hold the wick
  • Candy thermometer
  • A wick trimmer
  • Wax paper to avoid spills

Autumn candles making steps to follow:

Carefully, Melt the soy wax on a double boiler on the stove or in the microwave with constant stirring. Why am I not using paraffin wax despite its strong scent throw? Because:

  • It is a petroleum byproduct
  • Resourcing paraffin wax is non-renewable and definitely not sustainable
  • It doesn’t burn clean; produces smoke
  • Leaves black soot marks on walls of container and surroundings

I always prefer a vegetable-based wax like soy wax because:

  • It is 100% natural
  • Renewable sourced thus environment-friendly
  • Clean burning with low soot or smoke
  • It offers a great scent throw as well

Make sure you attach the candy thermometer (with clip) to the wax melting pot and monitor it regularly. Once the soy wax has melted, take the pot off the stove and allow it to cool to a lower temperature.

When the temperature reaches the flashpoint for the chosen essential oil, add 10 to 15 drops of it to the melted wax. I am going to add pumpkin spice for my pumpkin scented cupcake tea lights. Stir in well.

The following step is optional!

But you can get creative with your candles to match the vibes of making autumn candles for any themed party. For this, mildly heat the wax again and add a few chunks from your favorite food-grade dye or crayon to the melted wax. Mix it well so the color gets infused with the wax thoroughly. Allow the scented wax to cool again.

Now, pour the melted wax into your cupcake liners, about halfway full for tea lights.

Place the cotton wicks at the center of each autumn candle and wait until they harden (about 15 minutes).

After you have made your autumn candles, have fun with them! Get creative and add personal touches (e.g., add dried flower petals) to make your autumn candles unique.

If you need some inspiration to decorate your fall candles with dried flowers, we have a separate blog post for this as well. Make sure to read it well to understand the steps.

These are some essential tips to get you started:

  1. Always keep safety first and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Use an old candle as a test before you make your final fall scented candle, just to make sure that everything is working great, as it should.
  3. Make sure you have enough wax for each batch of candles and never double dip! This will affect the quality of your fall candle.
  4. Be sure to keep your autumn themed candles out of reach from pets, children, and other things that may cause the wax to spill when they get too close.
  5. Always use caution when burning candles and never leave them unattended.

The best part about making your own fall candles is that you can customize them perfectly for yourself. So, don’t be hesitate to try something new until you find the perfect fall candle recipe for you.
